NOT A HOTEL AOSHIMA was the brand’s very first location, developed through a public-private partnership on land solicited by Miyazaki City via public proposal. Designed by Shin Ohori of GENERAL DESIGN, the architecture features an open layout that harmonizes with the lush subtropical surroundings.
The property consists of six rooms across four distinct types. MASTERPIECE is a standalone residence closest to the ocean, offering an iconic stay immersed in the scenery of Aoshima. CHILL features an infinity pool that merges with the horizon, while SURF is a beachfront retreat with direct access to the waves—perfect for surfers. GARDEN offers two different landscapes to enjoy: the ocean and an internal courtyard. In 2026, two additional houses—CHILL 2.0 and COAST—will be added, as this coastal destination continues to evolve.

Brand Director
Guided by Shin Ohori’s vision of “creating spaces where people can spend rich, meaningful time,” we directed the architecture and furniture design of NOT A HOTEL AOSHIMA to help expand and express his world view. As the brand’s very first property, the project involved close collaboration with each team to develop rules and details that would come to define the essence of NOT A HOTEL—all within a limited timeframe.
We faced challenges in unfamiliar areas such as wood finishes and furniture, but through trial and error, we created a space filled with thought and intention. This process became a deeply meaningful experience and a crucial step in shaping the future direction of the brand. The lessons and foundations built here have continued to influence the design philosophy of subsequent properties, marking the beginning of NOT A HOTEL’s journey.
