NOT A HOTEL CLUB HOUSE HIROO is a luxury, one-group-per-day accommodation and lounge located in the quiet residential area of Hiroo, Minato-ku, Tokyo. The architecture and interiors are designed by Masamichi Katayama of Wonderwall®, featuring monolithic textures formed with cedar-board concrete and a design that blends Eastern and Western aesthetics.
The building includes a French restaurant “Hakunei” on the basement floor, a library on the ground floor, and lounge and accommodation spaces across the 3rd to 5th floors. Highlights include a sculptural spiral staircase and bathrooms bathed in natural light—testaments to the meticulous design detail throughout.
Set in a tranquil neighborhood despite being in central Tokyo, this is a space where guests can experience extraordinary moments as if in a “second home.”

The philosophy of Wonderwall®'s Masamichi Katayama—"designing without designing"—involves creating a sense of beauty through the use of refined yet humble materials and meticulously crafted invisible details.
In designing the lounge for NOT A HOTEL, we were mindful not to compromise Katayama’s design intent, while also ensuring the functionality expected of a private lounge. We worked closely with Katayama to carefully consider how the custom fixtures and built-in furniture would feel and function for our owners.
Since lounges differ subtly from hotel spaces in both use and specifications, we also revisited existing rules and reinterpreted them to better suit this unique environment. Today, the internal shared design ethos of "understated luxury" at NOT A HOTEL is deeply influenced by Katayama’s philosophy—resulting in a space that is both quietly sophisticated and deeply resonant.

To bring to life Wonderwall®︎’s design philosophy of ‘New Luxury,’ we took charge of everything from overall coordination and cost/schedule management to meticulous alignment with operational needs.
Particular attention was paid to elements such as the textured plaster walls and the elegantly curving spiral staircase. These details were repeatedly examined and adjusted on-site through close collaboration with the designer and contractors, ensuring a finish that satisfied all involved.
This project ultimately served as a formative experience, leading directly into our work on the KITAKARUIZAWA MASU project. It deepened our understanding of what it truly means to create a ‘refined’ space.
