Led by renowned architect Bjarke Ingels, BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) presents “NOT A HOTEL SETOUCHI” on the island of Sagi in the Seto Inland Sea.
Inspired by Japan’s natural climate, traditional architecture, and the idea of “angles,” three villas—180, 270, and 360—unfold across a peninsula-like site. Each villa is precisely angled to maximize the island’s contours and panoramic sea views, blending architecture seamlessly with nature.
Set against the calm waters of Setouchi, these linear forms dissolve into the sky and sea, creating a harmonious flow. Conceived as a cultural retreat where art, design, and gastronomy intersect, this is a place to experience a “new Setouchi landscape”—a peninsula of your own where the lines between nature and architecture, living and travel, quietly dissolve.

Week after week, over 100 proposal slides from BIG sparked ongoing discussions: what kind of architecture could only be realized by a Danish firm like BIG—yet exist nowhere but Setouchi? Through countless studies, we explored answers together.
From rammed earth walls to curved panoramic windows and solar panels inspired by traditional Japanese roof tiles, each element posed unprecedented challenges in Japan. But thanks to the collective wisdom of everyone involved, we’ve created architecture where tradition and the future gently converge.
With warm support from Mihara City and the residents of Sagi Island, we hope you’ll come experience the unique flow of time and landscape that can only be found on this island.

This project began with a desire to create architecture that harmonizes with the calm sea and island-dotted beauty of Setouchi.
By carefully studying the terrain, wind, and flow of light, we sought to maximize the natural charm of the site.
In collaboration with world-renowned architect Bjarke Ingels and his firm BIG, we’ve fused a global perspective with a deep respect for Japan’s natural and cultural landscape—shaping a new kind of stay experience that could only exist in Setouchi.
